Google Algorithm Updates
Google regularly updates its algorithms in pursuance of achieving the best search results for the users of Google Search Engine. Google Search engine is the most popular search engine on the World Wide Web. To ensure that it remains so, Google keeps its algorithms secret. Search Engine Result Pages display results based on keywords, links and content quality, but it is the algorithms which determine the final results.
Google is in a continuous process of updating its algorithms with the triple aim - to keep users interested, ensure that results are constantly improving and to discourage unethical use of its algorithms. Since its inception, Google has introduced several new algorithms such as the Page rank, Hilltop, and now Mayday to ensure that the quality of search results keeps becoming more relevant as per the keywords.
Parameters of Google Algorithms
Algorithms used by Google to determine the rankings of websites and web pages on SERPs take into account certain parameters. These parameters include
1. On-page and off-page optimization of web pages that ensures a Page rank
2. Relevancy of the webpage with the search keyword or key phrase.
3. Relevancy of a websites’ links to other websites and web pages.
4. Quality and originality of the content presented in a website or a webpage
The diagram above clearly indicates how the Google Algorithms utilise the various parameters for its SERPs. It is the workings of the algorithms which decide the ultimate rankings of a webpage. PageRank and Link Structure of a website are the determinants of Google Algorithms for better and faster results.
Google Algorithm for SEO
Search Engine optimization and Internet Marketing professionals are dependent on Google Algorithms to generate business for themselves and their clients. As we have discussed above, it is the algorithms that decide how, where and on what keywords a website or a webpage will rank.
Every SEO company works in accordance to the demands of the Google Algorithms. Webmasters and online marketers understand how the GoogleBot efficiently crawls and indexes pages on the web, so that they are able to produce more satisfying search results. Parameters set by Algorithms determine which pages will get cached and indexed, and thereafter, rank on a Search Engine Result Page. Each search engine optimizer keeps updated on the workings and changes that Google routinely undertakes to enhance its SERPs.
Google Update 2010
Algorithms match keywords and key phrases with the content of a web page. For this purpose, short as well as long tail key words are used by webmasters to rank their websites. Google introduced a new algorithm update in 2010 which was codenamed Mayday by SEOs and webmasters. Comments from the Search Engine Optimization industry seem to suggest that the latest algorithm has affected the results of long tail keywords
According to Google, the change in the algorithm was to ensure that higher quality sites surfaced on long tail queries. Thus, the Mayday algorithm update is seen as a ranking change and not as a crawling or an indexing change. Before this update Google which usually gave mixed results for long tail keywords. But, with this update it has developed an infrastructure and updated its algorithm to directly index longer phrases, which has resulted in more relevant results for key phrases.
